Prevention and Control of Emerging Viruses (PCVE) 11th Edition (4.3/5)
The course is aimed at all those personnel involved in biotechnological and virology work (technicians, managers, students, etc.) interested in the field of emerging and re-emerging viruses, and the prevention and control of the diseases they cause. Emerging viruses are, or may become, a risk to human and animal health, and constitute an economic problem of great magnitude.
Throughout the course, you will learn about the origins of the development of virology and you will go through some of the basic concepts of this field.
Subsequently, you will focus on emerging viruses and zoonoses, and you will be trained to analyze the factors that favor their appearance and spread. You will also learn about different control and prevention measures for viral infections and you will be able to review the current state of the development of diagnostic systems.
This course is taught remotely and is made up of an enjoyable and simple syllabus so that the student can follow it without any problem, regardless of their training.
If you are interested in this training and want to know all the details about its content and operation, you can do so by sending an email to the course coordinators (Ana Mª García, Diego A. Moreno)
goals
The main objective of this Course is to obtain basic knowledge about viruses, mainly emerging viruses, as well as the biotechnological tools and applications currently available to combat their effects on animal and human health and, consequently, on the economy. The specific objectives of the Course are:
- Acquire basic knowledge of virology and, more specifically, those related to emerging and re-emerging viruses.
- Detail the different anthropogenic and natural factors involved in the appearance of emerging viral diseases.
- Describe the characteristics and health consequences of some representative emerging viruses: SARS-CoV-2, Influenza, West Nile, Zika.
- Expose the potential of viruses as bioterrorist tools.
- Describe the biosafety conditions required to work with emerging viruses.
- Expose the different phases in the prevention and control of the appearance and spread of emerging viral diseases (diagnosis and prophylaxis)
Agenda
The Course program consists of ten Didactic Units grouped into three modules. In Module I, a brief review is made of the origins of the research that laid the foundations for the development of Virology and some of its basic concepts are succinctly reviewed. Module II focuses on emerging viruses and the zoonoses caused by them and analyzes the determining factors in their appearance and spread, as well as their transmission routes. Characteristics of four of these viruses (novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, influenza virus, West Nile virus, and Zika) as models of emerging viruses, as well as their consequences, are extensively described. Finally, the potential of viruses as bioterrorist tools is analyzed. Module III is dedicated to measures to control and prevent infection with emerging viruses by describing the biosafety conditions required for it, and reviewing the current state of development of diagnostic systems, vaccines and antivirals, through classical and biotechnological applications. .
Modulo I:
1 Brief history of Virology
2 Virus: basic concepts
Módulo II:
3 Emerging Viruses (Zoonoses): Factors involved in their appearance and expansion and modes of transmission.
4 The family of coronaviruses and the new SARS-CoV-2.
5 The Influenza virus.
6 West Nile virus and Zika virus.
7 Viruses and Bioterrorism
Module III:
8 Working conditions with emerging viruses: Biosafety
9 Prevention and Prophylaxis: Diagnosis
10 Prevention and prophylaxis: Vaccines and Antivirals
