SEM Microbiology (1985-1997). Bilingualism was introduced in the new journal, with articles being able to be in both English and Spanish. This fact made it quite different from the previous magazine, in which articles not written in Spanish were very scarce. It was also decided that each issue would include a mini-review, usually in English, on a topic of interest in microbiology, and that the manuscripts would be peer-reviewed. Some other changes were introduced during this period affecting the layout, style and format. In addition to research and review articles, SEM Microbiology opened a new “Complements” section, which included editorials, opinion and perspective articles, book reviews, and short biographies of scientists. During the last four years of publication of the magazine, all the research articles were already in English, which meant a big change. This fact did not deter the authors, on the contrary, the number of manuscripts increased to around 100 per year. Another change was the publication of monographic issues that began in 1993. Information on the total number of articles, pages and numbers per volume is presented in Table 1. The entire collection has been digitized by the CSIC Publications Service. A total of 396 articles and 3569 pages are available.
