Welcome to Industrial Microbiology and Microbial Biotechnology Group of the Spanish Society of Microbiology (SEM).

The Group brings together researchers from the university field, research centers and companies that study the applications of microorganisms in the production and design of products of industrial interest such as drugs and medicines, food, and in general technological products such as enzymes, bioplastics or biofuels.

Our objective is to facilitate the exchange of information, knowledge and ideas in order to constitute a forum for debate that encourages scientific and technological development, and helps researchers and work teams.

a greeting

In 1973 the idea of the formation of the Industrial Microbiology Group At the request of Jorge López Tello, but as his administration was not progressing properly, Juan F. Martín's proposal for its reactivation was accepted. The group was officially established in 1977, under the direction of Juan F. Martín with the collaboration of Federico Uruburu and Paloma Liras. The idea of the group was to unite the efforts of the teams of Spanish researchers working on biotechnology of microorganisms and serve as a link and transfer of technology and knowledge between them.

The activity of the Industrial Microbiology Group gave rise to a series of scientific meetings that were established on a biannual basis. The first of these was held at the CSIC Industrial Fermentation Center (Arganda del Rey, Madrid, 1980), which was followed by meetings at the Fat Institute (Seville, 1982), held jointly with the Molecular Genetics Groups and Biotechnology of the SEB, also called the 1st National Biotechnology Meeting (BIOTECHNOLOGY-86) organized by Juan F. Martín at the University of León (1986) and the group meeting held in Barcelona (1988) that coincided with the BIOTEC- 88 organized by Ricardo Guerrero in which the constitution of the Spanish Society of Biotechnology was agreed: SEBIOT.

The beginnings of SEBIOT

At the XX SEM Congress of Cáceres (2005) Tomás G. Villa promoted the debate on the future of the specialized group and it was decided to change the name of the group, which was renamed "Grupo de Microbiología Industrial y Biotecnología Microbiana" and the group logo It was redesigned from the one used in the BIOTEC-92 Congress.
