The GISAZ Group (Zoonosis and Animal Health Research Group) belongs to the UCO (University of Cordoba). GISAZ is an interdisciplinary group with more than 25 years of experience in Animal Health. This group is included within CIBERINFEC and Competitive Research Unit in Zoonoses and Emerging Diseases (ENZOEM) at UCO. It is integrated by researchers and professors of the UCO, including epidemiologists, pathologists, molecular biologists and specialists in the diagnosis and control of transmissible diseases in wild and domestic species.
MAIN RESEARCH LINES
- Epidemiological studies of zoonotic diseases. Within this line we are evaluating the role of different domestic, peridomestic and wild species, and the risk factors involved in the transmission of bacterial, viral and parasitic zoonotic diseases (tuberculosis, salmonellosis, tularemia, borreliosis, flavivirosis, hepatitis E, influenza virus, Crimean-Congo, Mers-Cov, SARS-Cov, avian influenza, toxoplasmosis, leishmaniasis, piroplasmosis, diseases caused by protists or trichinosis, among others) from a One Health perspective.
- Epidemiological study of transmissible diseases of importance in animal health. This line of research studies the impact of different emerging and re-emerging diseases in domestic and wild animal populations (myxomatosis, rabbit hemorrhagic viral disease, pestivirosis, paratuberculosis, bluetongue, Schmallenberg disease, among others) from a One Health perspective, determining the risk factors involved in the transmission and maintenance of these diseases,.
- Immunopathogenesis and diagnosis of zoonoses and emerging diseases. This line of research is focused on the inquiry of the pathogenesis and diagnosis of diseases like as tuberculosis, hepatitis E, leishmania, herpesvirus, SARS-Cov, pestivirosis, paratuberculosis or epizootic hemorrhagic disease. This line is based on the application between immunopathologic methods in experimental and observational models to understand the interactions of hosts and pathogens, as well as develop innovative immunodiagnostic tools.
- Development and evaluation of immunostimulants for the specific and non-specific fight against different infectious agents. This focused on valuate the protection of vaccines and design new vaccine strategies in disease of interest on diseases of importance in public health and animal health such as tuberculosis, leishmaniosis, paratuberculosis, flavovirosis and SARS-Cov) Moreover, we work in immunoprofilixis from the concept of trained immunity to explore the extent and efficacy of this non-specific protection due to inactivated mycobacteria, as well as to discover the immunological mechanisms involved in this protection against a wide range of zoonotic agents: bacterial (Salmonella and Borrrelia) and parasitic (Leishmania and Plasmodium).
