Applied Functional Ecophysiology Group (GEFA)
Susana Redondo Gómez, University of Seville
The Applied Functional Ecophysiology Group (GEFA) is attached to the Department of Plant Biology and Ecology of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Seville. We are a multidisciplinary group of Plant Physiologists, Ecologists and Microbiologists, specialized in the study of the ecophysiological response of plants to different types of environmental stress, and in evaluating the role of microorganisms in that response. Specifically, we work with plant growth promoting bacteria (PGPR), which we isolate from halophilic plants in coastal ecosystems. We carry out applied studies in the agricultural field, in phytoremediation and in conservation, always seeking to minimize the environmental impact. For example, we study the development of bacterial biofertilizers to improve the sustainable growth of crops such as strawberries, to desalinate degraded agricultural soils, or the potential of bacterial inoculation for the phytoremediation of heavy metals in marshes.
