The UCM Health Surveillance research group (920033) began its activity in 1993, under the name "Molecular epidemiology, animal health and food and environmental safety", within the current Department of Animal Health of the Faculty of UCM Veterinarian. This group, led by Professor Lucas Domínguez, continued Prof. Guillermo Suárez's research in food safety (focused on the study of Listeria and other facultative intracellular pathogens, as well as microbial toxins) contributing new areas of research such as the study of the problems of antibiotic resistance, vaccination as an alternative to antimicrobials, tuberculosis control or research into zoonoses and re-emerging diseases in wildlife. Sanitary Surveillance moved its UCM staff to the facilities of the VISAVET center of this University, constituting the origin of this research center and being validated in 2004 in the first call for evaluation of UCM research groups. The group has received an Excellent rating from the State Research Agency in 2018 and 2022. In July 2023, it held the 2023 Health Surveillance Conference, coinciding with the 30th Anniversary of the group's creation.

LINES OF INTEREST AND RESEARCH ACTIVITY

The group's primary objective is health surveillance under the focus of a single health, for which a multidisciplinary group has been formed with references in each of the work areas belonging to different institutions (Complutense University of Madrid, Research Institute in Hunting Resources -CSIC-UCLM-JCCLM, Animal Health Research Center-INIA, Carlos III Health Institute, University of Minnesota, University of Extremadura, University of Burgos and European University). The group has shared equipment and facilities at the VISAVET center that have allowed them to jointly develop their lines of research. With respect to financing, the group has participated since its inception in more than 170 research projects, both in national plans and in competitive international programs [e.g. European Joint Program (currently the only European food safety program) and European Research Council (first in the veterinary area of ​​the UCM)], more than 300 contracts with administrations and companies and has obtained more than 80 personnel grants. To a large extent, thanks to these latest grants, it has been consolidated as a space for continued training, allowing, for example, the defense of more than 80 doctoral theses. Finally, the collaboration of group members in expert panels, platforms and working groups demonstrates its consistency in its areas of work at the international (e.g. Med-Vet-Net Association), national (e.g. Veterinary Surveillance Network of Resistance to Antibiotics and RE-LAB) and regional (e.g. Advanced Technologies of the Community of Madrid, with excellent rating after 3 programs). Its researchers direct research centers and international reference laboratories (EU-RLs, OIE-RLs...). The group carries out important work in the field of transferring results and advising companies and administrations, collaborating in health programs such as the eradication of bovine tuberculosis and campaigns to control leishmaniasis and other zoonotic diseases. Also noteworthy is his very active participation in the main health crises that our country has suffered, or the coordination of the Agri-Food and Health Cluster of the CEI Moncloa.
