Microbiology of Agroforestry Ecosystems

Manuel Fernandez Lopez. manuel.fernandez@eez.csic.es

Department of Soil Microbiology and Symbiotic Systems, Zaidín Experimental Station, CSIC, calle Profesor Albareda 1, 18008 Granada.

The group has traditionally worked on the beneficial interactions between plants and soil microorganisms. That is, those microorganisms that promote plant growth, that protect against pathogens, that provide nutrients to the plant, etc. in both agricultural and forestry systems. With the development of massive sequencing techniques, the approaches we develop are holistic, going on to study metagenomes and microbiomes; and to consider the plant-microbiome complex as a holobiont. Our work with tree roots has both an agricultural part, since we investigate the role played by the root microbiome of the olive tree in sensitivity/tolerance to verticillium wilt; and environmental by investigating the role of the microbiome in the recovery of oak forests after a forest fire or in the resilience of Pyrenean oak and pine forests in the face of climate change. The ultimate goal is to contribute to the maintenance of natural and agroforestry ecosystems by managing their associated microbiomes.
