The Spanish Society of Microbiology (SEM) is a scientific society founded in 1946 with the aim of promoting microbiology and contributing to its dissemination among citizens.

The Spanish Society of Microbiology (SEM) is a scientific society founded in 1946 at the Jaime Ferrán Institute, of the Higher Council for Scientific Research (CSIC), in Madrid. Its original name was the Society of Spanish Microbiologists, which it maintained until 1970, when, by decision of its partners, it took the current name of the Spanish Society of Microbiology (SEM).

The main objectives of SEM are: to promote basic and applied microbiology, cultivate international relations, bring together the different professionals who worked in this science, and contribute to the dissemination of science in general, and of microbiology in particular, among citizenship.

It is an interdisciplinary society, which has about 1,700 members who work in the different fields of microbiology.

Young Researchers of the Spanish Society of Microbiology (JISEM) is an initiative promoted by the Specialized Group of Teaching and Dissemination (D + D) from Spanish Society of Microbiology (SEM).
The objective of this group is to facilitate access and promote research in Microbiology among final-cycle students, as well as to foster the relationship between young SEM researchers.
