In the Official State Gazette of April 6, 2022, the decree that establishes the ordination and minimum teachings of the Baccalaureate was published. In said bulletin, the following statement can be read: "Biology is a discipline whose advances have accelerated remarkably in recent decades, driven by an increasingly broad and strengthened knowledge base." Within the field of Biology, one of the areas that has experienced great progress is Microbiology. However, these advances have not been effectively incorporated into secondary education.
This issue has concerned the SEM Teaching and Dissemination group for some time. For this reason, at the last meeting in July a round table was organized on "Microbiology in the Secondary/Bachillerato curriculum". There it was revealed how the terms "male or female bacteria", "bacterial parasexuality", "mesosome", "Monera kingdom" and other outdated concepts are still used in teaching materials for Baccalaureate or training cycles and even in selectivity exams.
For all these reasons, within the Teaching and Dissemination group, a work commission has been created to serve as a reference and help publishers, teachers and students of Baccalaureate and training cycles to be up to date, not only of the new knowledge originated so far, but also those that may be generated in the future. The Coordinator of this commission is Professor Jordi Barbé (jordi.barbe@uab.cat), Professor of Microbiology at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. Anyone interested in collaborating can contact him directly.
As starting material, the document "Updating of Microbiology concepts for Baccalaureate and Higher Level Training Cycles” elaborated by Professor Jordi Barbé.
